Creation Care

We will be joining the Edmonton and Area Land Trust (EALT) to provide extra care to some recently planted shrubs at a parcel on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River on Saturday, November 2.

EALT conserves nature in Edmonton and area, engaging people and communities in land conservation and stewardship.

A newly secured land is in need of some assistance! This parcel of land lies along the bank of the North Saskatchewan River, upstream from Big Island Provincial Park in an Environmentally Significant Area.

Over the next few years the aim to restore the environmental health of the area, which includes tree planting to restore the ecosystem, and make it more suitable for wildlife and plant species to thrive.

In August, EALT held an event to restore an exposed sandy slope. They covered the ground with coconut matting, and planted native dogwood and saskatoons across the slope.

Experts from the Edmonton Native Plant Society have recommended that additional material be added to the base of the shrubs to help them thrive, including cardboard or hemp mats to suppress weed growth, leaf litter to introduce forest fungi to the soil, and wood chips to conserve moisture. This is where we come in!

Exact location will be provided after registration. We are also planning to carpool from the church. Contact tyler.b.shannon@hotmail.com for more info.
