Proverbs 1:20-33

Reflect
Yesterday, we launched into a swift dash through Proverbs, typically referred to as “Wisdom Literature”.

Today’s passage personifies wisdom as a female. This has resulted in many interpretations including a female God, the Holy Spirit and a preincarnate Jesus. I don’t find the arguments at all convincing, though this attribute of God being identified as an alluring female to its original readers which were likely primarily male, may have some credibility.

It's a challenge for people that only speak English to consider that other languages identify words in the feminine or masculine.

Daily our news feeds reveal that no one group of people owns wisdom, and no one group of people is without foolishness. Clearly, foolishness abounds. As we navigate this summer and prepare for a polarizing fall, we are best reminded that wisdom, not folly, puts a smile on the “face of God”.

It is wisdom that will provide a pathway for others to encounter God’s Spirit through us. Yet, foolishness is powerfully developing momentum as our culture attempts to be satisfied through greed and entitlement. This does not need to be so.

How are you guarding yourself against the sultry allure of foolishness? Do you hear wisdom calling you with urgency? What is she calling you to do for the glory of our Lord?
