Proverbs 3:1-18

Reflect

These are beautiful words of wisdom from Solomon as he appeals to his son to pay attention. What does it mean to live a life rooted in wisdom?

Very broadly, Solomon’s words can be summarized as follows: remember and obey God’s commandments (vs1-2); let love, kindness, and faithfulness remain close to your heart (vs3-4); trust in the Lord with all your heart (vs5-6); be humble and fear the Lord (vs7-8); honour the Lord by offering your wealth, resources, and efforts (vs9-10); and accept and embrace God’s discipline because He loves you (vs11-12). What a list!

I think in some ways, we can easily turn this into a checklist, but I believe the core of this passage centres on storing these words of wisdom in our hearts (v1). The promise of peace, longevity, wholeness, and harmony in all areas of life is not found in our actions but in the Word of God working deeply in our hearts to produce the actions.

Apply

Storing God’s Word is a process—it takes time. As you read this passage, find time to slow down, breathe, and pay attention to what the Spirit is highlighting for you. Perhaps God is revealing areas where you need to abide closer to His commandments, opportunities to be kind, pride that must be quenched by humility, or something else.
