Newcomer Assistance Ministry
“For I was hungry and you gave me food,
I was thirsty and you gave me drink,
I was a stranger and you welcomed me,”
—Matthew 25:35
What’s Happening?
“Love the sojourner, therefore, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.”
- Deut.10:19
At McKernan Baptist Church, we believe that following Jesus means listening to His voice and walking in His ways. Jesus tells us, “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). One of the clearest ways we can follow Him is by extending His welcome to those who are new to our community and country.
Welcoming the Sojourner
Throughout Scripture, God’s heart for the sojourner is unmistakable. From the people of Israel being called to remember their own journey as strangers in Egypt, to Jesus Himself embracing those who were on the margins, the message is consistent: the people of God are called to welcome the newcomer.
Jesus never turned away those who sought Him, and as His followers we are invited to reflect that same spirit of hospitality.
Our Newcomer Assistance Ministry
That is why our church has begun referring to what was once called our Refugee Assistance Ministry as the Newcomer Assistance Ministry. This name better reflects our heart to walk alongside all who are new to Canada—whether they are arriving as refugees, immigrants, or international students. Each one carries a unique story, and each one is deeply loved by God.
Are you new to Canada or do you know someone who is?
If you are new to Edmonton and arrived in Canada within the last five years, please complete our Intake Form. It helps our team understand your situation and identify how we can assist you. The information you provide is used only to connect you with appropriate resources and for follow-up. You are also welcome to share this form with friends or family who may benefit from this support.
Through this ministry, we want to provide practical support, friendship, and community. But even more, we want every newcomer to know that they are seen, valued, and welcomed—not only by us, but by Jesus Himself.
Following His Voice Together
As we listen for the Shepherd’s voice, He is leading us outward, toward those who may feel alone or displaced. By walking with newcomers, we echo the welcome of Christ and embody His love in tangible ways.
May we continue to hear His voice and follow faithfully—together creating a community where every person, near or far, can find a place to belong.
