Refugee Assistance Ministry
“I was a stranger and you invited me in.”
—Matthew 25:35
What’s Happening?
“Love the sojourner, therefore, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.”
- Deut.10:19
“For I was hungry and you gave me food,
I was thirsty and you gave me drink,
I was a stranger and you welcomed me,”
- Matt.25:35
There are currently more than 80 million displaced people around the globe, and of those, 30-34 million are children. This means that one in every 97 people in the world is now forcibly displaced.
The Government of Canada has committed to allowing at least 400,000 newcomers to Canada each year. McKernan has committed to actively caring for the stranger and in April 2022, McKernan Baptist Church officially launched its Refugee Assistance Ministry (RAM).
The RAM team spent the summer learning and preparing and in September 2022 we welcomed our first group of refugees from Ukraine. Since then, we have been helping them to get settled in Edmonton in the areas of government applications, banking, health care, schooling, employment, and more.
How Can I Help?
McKernan Baptist Church currently relies on donations to enable our Refugee Assistance Ministry. Financial contributions allow us to cover things like rent, utilities, groceries and more for the refugees we serve.
In addition, material donations for specific items are listed based on identified needs. Due to an inability to process and store unrequested material donations, please do not deliver items to the church that have not been listed.
Finally, this ministry runs through the volunteer efforts of the church. If you’d like more information about volunteering, please reach out via our online contact form or email vicky@mckernanbaptist.ca/.
