Proverbs 18:1-12

Reflect

There are a number of crucial themes in Proverbs. No doubt, you’ve caught that the theme of wisdom flows throughout. Wisdom is subtle in verse 5 of today’s passage; however, it is intimately connected with another primary theme in Proverbs, which is justice.

One could speculate that those who call themselves Christians would be filled with wisdom. Therefore, they would not be controlled, or at the very least influenced by anyone that has a distorted craving for human glory or rationalizes inequity. If one knows Jesus and longs to see Him glorified by all peoples, if one trusts Jesus as the one revealing that true power is in the courage to love the oppressed, that person is not allured by wealth and arrogance.

We need to ruthlessly guard ourselves from being partial to the wicked. The wicked are often the ones getting rich as they exploit the worker involved in fast fashion, human trafficking, real estate and agriculture. Sometimes the savings you have in the purchase “deprives the innocent of justice”.

Jesus calls us to be with Him as He hears the groans of the oppressed and assures them that the church is on the way to help.

Do you trust that Jesus is Lord of glory? Then how will you intentionally be involved in seeing Him glorified by seeing the innocent be lifted out of their bondage?
