Proverbs 19:16-29

Reflect

At times it can be challenging to accept instruction--to be told that we are wrong about something, to be shown a better way, or be corrected in an area of sin. It can feel really personal and sometimes uncomfortable. The verse we are landing on today tells us to “listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future” (verse 20). A mark of wisdom is to be someone that receives and accepts instruction, someone that desires to learn and grow and live rightly before God. Some of the wisest people I know are those that graciously accept instruction.

To be someone who is teachable is to be wise.

This proverb also points out that both listening to advice and accepting instruction have an impact on the future. The effects of receiving or rejecting wisdom may not play out until later.

Take a few minutes to think about the following questions:

What does it look like to listen to advice and accept instruction in your life?

Is God inviting you to accept instruction in a particular area? What could be the next step in walking that out?
