Proverbs 19:1-15
Reflect
Imagine having the desire to go for an adventurous hike on a Saturday afternoon. You get excited, quickly pack a few items, and start venturing to the trail.
As you hike, you begin to face some unexpected challenges. The terrain is wet, the skies slowly darken with signs of rain, there isn’t enough food or water in your bag to last the duration of the hike, and you forgot your trekking poles. The enthusiasm for the hike has been snuffed out due to the lack of foresight and planning. The hasty start has led to a lack of preparation, making the hike difficult and possibly unsafe.
Our capacity for wisdom is strengthened and increased by knowledge. Solomon is not referring to academic knowledge but to the accurate observations and study of life with guidance and direction from the Lord. If we keep our heads down, our senses closed to the world, and our faces turned away from God, it’s hard to make sense of what’s happening around us.
We’re all tempted to make hasty choices, but wisdom speaks to desperately needing God’s help for all aspects of our day-to-day lives.
