Proverbs 20:1-15

Reflect

Out of the proverbs in this passage, I have chosen verse 3 which says, "It is to one’s honour to avoid strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel."

We live in a world where disagreements and conflicts are common, and these aren’t always wrong or to be avoided. However, it can be tempting to engage in arguments simply to prove a point or defend our pride. This proverb highlights the importance of knowing when to step into a difference of opinion and when not to.

Avoiding dissention doesn’t mean we shy away from standing up for what is right, but it means discerning which battles are worth fighting. It is an act of humility and strength to step back and let go of arguments that lead only to division and hurt.

Being "quick to quarrel" may reveal some of our insecurities through a desire to assert ourselves at all costs. This approach to disagreements often can erode relationships rather than strengthen them.

If the opportunity to enter into a dispute presents itself today, pause and ask God for the wisdom to discern when to speak and when to remain silent, choosing the path of peace and honour in our interactions with others.
