Proverbs 22:1-16
Reflect
I once heard a pastor say, “True humility isn’t about thinking less of ourselves, but thinking of ourselves less.”
The first part, “thinking less of ourselves,” suggests an overemphasis on our flaws and shortcomings, which can lead to a negative self-image. This might result in downplaying our strengths and achievements, potentially coming across as false humility, where the focus is still on ourselves, albeit in a diminished way.
On the other hand, “thinking of ourselves less” shifts our focus outward, recognizing that our strengths, abilities, and gifts are given by God to serve and build up others. By thinking of ourselves less, we align our lives with God’s will, purpose, and guidance, allowing His priorities to take precedence over our own.
It’s not surprising that humility and fear of the Lord are intertwined in Proverbs 22:4. When we approach God with deep respect, reverence, and awe, we begin to see ourselves in the right light—recognizing our dependence on Him and our need for His grace. This posture of humility leads us to live in a way that honours God and fulfils His purpose for our lives – it points us outward.
