Proverbs 22:17-29

Reflect

Some of today’s wisdom discourages us from making friends with those who have a hot temper or who are easily angered in case we end up becoming like them. This advice is similar to a broader saying found in 1 Corinthians 15:33 that says, “Bad company corrupts good character.” The people that we surround ourselves with matters. It’s not that we shouldn’t ever hang around people that are different than us, but rather we need to be intentional about who we are hanging around with and the effect they have on who we are becoming.

One metaphor is to ask ourselves if we are more of a thermometer or a thermostat in our relationships. Thermometers react and change to match the circumstances around them. Thermostats set the temperature of the room.

So, when you look at your relationships specifically with non-believers, how are you intentionally being a thermostat and affecting the temperature in the relationship? Or are you allowing yourself to be a thermometer and be more impacted by them?
