Proverbs 26:1-18

Reflect

In James 3:10 we read, “Out of the same mouth come praising and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.” James speaks about the power of the tongue and the importance of taming it. We see a similar theme in Proverbs 26:17-28. Here is a clear list of all the ways our words can bring harm.

They can bring harm when we get involved in quarrels that aren’t our own. Or when we make malicious jokes at other’s expense. Our words can bring harm when we gossip or fuel the fire of gossip. We can do a lot of harm with the words we say. But we can also do a lot of good.
Psalm 19:14 says, “May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.”

Knowing the harm that our words can have, what does it look like to speak words of life over others--words that are pleasing to God?

Are there words God is asking you to stop speaking to others?
Are there any words God is asking you to speak to someone to bring life and encouragement?
