Devotional Guide for Friday, September 6

Proverbs 25:18-28

Reflect

In our neighbourhood, the city has initiated a demolition project on some community townhouses due to tenant safety concerns. Arborists have been cutting down trees, and workers have been tirelessly chipping away at the project. According to the newsletters, structural issues were found that posed a risk to the tenants. Thankfully, the impacted tenants were safely relocated.

In the same way that the walls of a house protect its tenants, self-control protects our minds and hearts (v28). Without it, we may be susceptible to certain temptations, habits, and influences that cause more harm than good.

If we diligently maintain and upkeep these “walls,” we can stand firm during life’s challenges. But how do we strengthen our self-control to guard us from the demolition of the soul?

Galatians 5:22 talks about self-control as a fruit of the Spirit. Regularly praying that God would grow this fruit in your life will yield strength to overcome, awareness of certain triggers and temptations, and a desire for what is true, good, and holy.

Apply

Take time to specifically pray for God to grow the fruit of self-control. As you pray and meditate, take note of areas in your life where there is a lack of self-control, and then identify the triggers and temptations. Bring these to the Lord.
