Philippians 4:10-13

Reflect

How often are we tempted with the thought, “If only I had _______, then I would be happy”? Fill in the blank for yourself. If only I had a bigger paycheck, or a bigger house, or that new car, or a partner, or that latest iPhone, etc., etc. It’s tempting to think that our contentment can be found by having more. But Paul shows us that somehow, he has been able to find contentment both when he was in need and when he had plenty.

He shares the secret in verse 13, “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.” Paul shares that it is his union with the living, exalted Christ that is the secret to being content, and is his source of abiding strength amid opposition and challenge.

When you take a look at your life, can you see yourself waiting for something to happen in order for you to be content? What is that thing? I’d encourage you to spend some time with Jesus asking the question of why you think this thing is the missing piece to your contentment. And if that’s not where you find yourself today, maybe ask Him what it would look like for you to find deeper contentment in Him today.
